Boating in Thailand

About Your Stay

Long-tail boats are used as the principle form of transportation to many islands, though they are slowly being replaced in some instances by speed boats. In Thailand, these boats shuttle passengers and goods between islands. When riding on a long-tail boat, there are a few things to be prepared for aside from the possibility of rough water. These boats generally pull up onto sand bars or beaches, but passengers will need to wade through water so waterproof or easily removable shoes are recommended. If you are looking to avoid being splashed by waves, try to find a seat towards in back and middle of the boat, as this is where you will be least likely to get splashed. Do not stand on a long-tail boat as this could cause the boat to tip, especially if there are just a few people in it.

Welcome!

In Thailand, traditional long-tail boats are still used for transportation between islands. Though they do present a clear and present danger to any electronics that are not properly stored, long-tail boats are a bit of a thrill ride. Be sure to avoid taking a ride in a long-tail if a storm is approaching or if you can see large waves, as it may be safer to wait a few hours or days before setting out to sea.
